Who makes the decision? You - or your stone-age brain?

We work in the field of decision making. In other words when we humans can and can not trust our own judgement and thereby make healthy and sustainable decisions.

Equipped with a stone-age brain in a modern, complex world, too often our decisions deviate from the “rules of rationality”.

For an example, here is a little puzzle. Do not try to solve it but listen to your intuition:

A bat and ball cost € 1,10.
The bat costs one euro more than the ball.
How much does the ball cost?

A number came to your mind. The number, of course, is 10 cents for the ball!

But it is wrong, do the math, and you will see. If the ball costs 10 cents then the total cost will be € 1,20 (the ball: 10 cent + the bat: 10 cents plus 1 euro more = € 1,20). The correct answer is 5 cents (the ball: 5 cent + the bat: 5 cents plus 1 euro more = € 1,10). Our stone-age brain makes mistakes like this all the time!

What to do about this stone-age brain of ours?
